Certain feelings can interfere with normal sexual function, including feeling nervous about or self-conscious about sex, feeling stressed either at home or at work, or feeling troubled in your current sexual relationship. In these cases, treatment incorporating psychological counseling with you and your sexual partner may be successful. One episode of failure, regardless of cause, may propagate further psychological distress, leading to further erectile failure. Los of desire or interest in sexual activity can be psychological or due to low testosterone levels.
“We listen to the patient and partner, understand the cause of the problem and work with the couple to start treatment that works best for the patient,” says Dr. Honig. PDE-5 inhibitors (phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors): These are medicines which relax muscle cells in the penis and increase blood flow. Vacuum erection device: This pulls blood into the penis, causing an erection. The erection is maintained by placing an elastic ring at the base of the penis. So, what are the options for a man with ED? Well, there are a few. Usually the first option we (urologists and primary care doctors) will try are medications like Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, etc. All those medications function by bringing more blood flow to the penis. They are all pretty similar in their action, and if one of them works for you, chances are the others will, too. Some men will experience side effects, most common being facial flushing.
Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is the inability to achieve or sustain a hard enough erection for satisfactory completion of sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction is different from other health conditions that interfere with male sexual function, such as lack of sexual desire (decreased libido) and problems with ejaculation release of the fluid from the penis (ejaculatory dysfunction) and orgasm/climax (orgasmic dysfunction), and penile curvature (Peyronie's disease), although these problems may also be present. ED affects about 50% of men age 40 and over. This article focuses on the evaluation and treatment of erectile dysfunction.
Phosphodiesterase inhibitor medications, such as sildenafil (Viagra) can cause a reduction in blood pressure, and so should not be taken by patients known to have low blood pressure (hypotension), or in those who have recently had a stroke or heart attack. Similarly, they should not be used in patients who take nitrate medication (such as glyceryl trinitrate, GTN, or isosorbide mononitrate) for chest pain. Phosphodiesterase inhibitor medications are associated with some side-effects, which include headaches, hot flushes, and dizziness. More serious side-effects may occur less commonly, including chest pains, prolonged and painful erections (priapism) or a change in vision. If patients experience any of these symptoms, they should seek immediate medical attention.
The primary symptom of erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or keep an erection. This condition prevents you from having or completing sexual activity.
“And we know that the disease has caused a tremendous amount of stress on people,” he said, “and that can affect your ability to get erections.”
Several treatment options are available to help ED. Sometimes, resolving underlying medical conditions will also improve your ED symptoms.

Malleable implants usually consist of paired rods, inserted surgically into each of the corpora cavernosa. The rods are stiff, and to have an erection, one bends them up and then when finished with intercourse one bends them down. They do not change in length or width. The malleable implants are the least mechanical and thus have the lowest risk of malfunction. However, also have the least "normal appearance."
