Pelvic floor muscles can be identified by attempting to stop the flow of urine mid-stream. These are the muscles that will be used. Start with an empty bladder and tighten the pelvic floor muscles for 5 seconds, then relax for 5 seconds. Attempt to do 5 repetitions (reps) the first day. Work up to 10 seconds at a time. Aim for 3 sets of 10 reps daily. Avoid tightening muscles in the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks and avoid holding your breath. Studies have been inconclusive as to whether testosterone replacement therapy is helpful for men with ED. Men with hypogonadism (low testosterone levels and impaired sperm production or function) may benefit, but men who have ED and normal testosterone levels are not likely to benefit from testosterone therapy. Before considering testosterone therapy, men should be sure that their hormone levels have been measured correctly and accurately and found to be low on at least two separate occasions.

Can’t or don’t want to take ED drugs? The vacuum pump method is the next most common choice among men with erectile dysfunction who pass on pills, says Dr. Bennett. To create an erection, you place a plastic cylinder over the penis and pump the air out of the cylinder to force blood to flow into the penis. An elastic ring that you slide onto the base of your penis holds the erection. This ED treatment device is effective for about 75 percent of men. Side effects include numbness, bruising, and weak ejaculation — and the ring must be removed after 30 minutes.
So what’s going on here? Why does having more sex keep the male organ in trim instead of wearing it out? The vacuum device creates a vacuum to pull blood into the penis. Unlike a normal erection, the inflow of blood does not continue once the individual removes the vacuum device. The rubber band placed at the base of the penis constricts the penis to prevent the blood from leaving the penis. As there is no inflow or outflow of blood when the rubber band is in place, it is uncommon for the tip of the penis (the glans) to appear a little blue and the penis to be cooler. Once intercourse is completed, the individual removes the rubber band and the blood drains out of the penis.
