Unfortunately, many men are reluctant to report erectile dysfunction (ED) to their partner, or physician, due to social stigmas associated with bedroom performance. ED, or the inability to maintain an erection, is much more common than the general population may realize and has a lot to do with men’s health. A Johns Hopkins study revealed that over 18 million men in the U.S. over the age of 20 experience difficulties having and maintaining an erection.
Stay well hydrated by consuming at least eight to 10 glasses of pure water daily. Dehydration causes your tissues to contract and blood flow to become more sluggish.
Smoking, excessive use of alcohol and illicit drugs are also associated with ED.13 A study in 2005 suggests that ED is not only more likely among men who smoked compared with those who never did, but that in younger men with ED, cigarette smoking is very likely the cause of their impotence.14 15

But it may take up to a year while some men may never recover their ability to have a natural erection.

More blood flows into the penis. In the two flexible tubes of spongy tissue that extend the length of the shaft (the corpora cavernosa, or “cave-like bodies”), muscle tissue slackens. Their tiny caverns swell with blood, straining against the surrounding membranes. Blood gets trapped in the organ. The result is a longer, stiffer penis -- and also, because blood brings oxygen with it, a thoroughly oxygenated one.
